National Breast Cancer Foundation

Pink Ribbon

Thank you very much for supporting National Breast Cancer Foundation and being part of the Pink Ribbon Campaign.

Did you know that 1 in 9 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime? That's over 14,000 women a year. What a frightening statistic! And furthermore over 100 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in the next year too. That means there are a lot of people affected by this disease each year, either directly or indirectly. That's why we need research more than ever.

I take great comfort in the progress research has made. When the National Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1994, 30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer lost their battle. Less than twenty years later, that percentage has been halved - all due to research. So research does achieve positive outcomes!

Our goal at the National Breast Cancer Foundation is to have zero deaths from breast cancer by the year 2030.

By supporting the Pink Ribbon Campaign you are partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation and helping us to achieve that goal.

AND there is something else I want to ask you to do today to assist breast cancer research. It doesn't cost any money! You can become a member of Register4 - it's free and it helps researchers do their work more efficiently and therefore make better use of the funds you are raising today.

What's Register4 do I hear you asking?

It's Australia's first online community where you can sign up to participate in breast cancer research, and we want YOU! In fact we want a million of you!

Please go to www.register4.org.au to learn all about it. You just have to be 18 or over to become a member - man or woman, history of cancer or not.

As a Register4 member you can volunteer your time on approved research projects of the highest standard and help the National Breast Cancer Foundation find a cure for breast cancer.

In the last year we have signed up over 26,000 members and in the last week to celebrate Register4's first birthday, we have signed up over 1450 new members and had almost 4000 members complete the first online research project, a Health & Lifestyle Questionnaire. Please join me at www.register4.org.au

Thank you very much for your support. I really appreciate it, as do all the families in Australia who have benefitted so far from research into breast cancer and those who will benefit in the future.

Best wishes,

Rhonda Burchmore
2011 Pink Ribbon Campaign Ambassador
